The Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill of 1993
for Diabetic Patients

We have become aware that few of our diabetic patients are familiar with the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill that was passed in 1993. Many senior citizens who receive Medicare and have diabetes are subject to debilitating foot problems, not only related to diabetes sores but also to deformed feet, falls, bunions etc. Many of these problems could be alleviated through therapeutic shoes. This bill provides partial reimbursement for depth shoes, custom molded shoes and shoe inserts or modifications to those who qualify for part B of Medicare. You must have a physician certify that a therapeutic shoe is needed to restore you to your previous level of functioning or impedes risk of developing further problems.

Within a calendar year you can receive up to 80% reimbursement of Medicare rates for:

  • One pair of custom molded shoes (including inserts) and two additional pairs of inserts.
  • Or one pair of depth shoes and 3 pairs of inserts.

In addition

  • Separate inserts may be covered under certain conditions.
  • A shoe modification will be covered as a substitute for an insert.
  • A custom molded shoe is covered when the patient has a foot deformity not accommodated by the depth of shoe.

If you believe that custom orthotics would be of benefit to your personal foot care or sports performance needs, we offer complimentary consultation prior to orthotic construction. While custom orthotics can bring great relief to many conditions, and sport orthotics can be a great boost to sport performance, orthotic treatment is most beneficial in context of a wholistic wellness plan. PedOrthic Services does not diagnose foot problems or prescribe medical treatment for any foot problem. If there is any concern whether an orthotic is right for you, please consult your physician.
